Throw away the scale!


It’s no secret that stepping onto a scale is a haunting experience for most people. Luckily, I am a firm believer in throwing away the scale and gauging your weight loss process using different, more effective, and much less daunting methods.

First, let me debunk a common misconception. Most people confuse “weight loss” with “fat loss” and that’s a big “no no”! When you lose weight, you lose more than just fat. Muscle and water are two huge components that make up your weight, so when you lose weight, you can lose some of each.

Another common problem is that many people set fat loss goals for themselves that are unreasonable. The truth is, without going on an unhealthy near-starvation diet, you can only expect to lose 1-2 pounds of fat per week at best. Don’t expect to lose 10 pounds in a week, because even if you do, that weight is not going to be all fat loss. Losing muscle is not good for your health, and you will want to preserve it as much as you can.

The important thing to remember is that every individual loses weight differently and in no way does a scale portray how successful you’re being with your weight loss goals.

Like most trainers, I know that there will be clients who find success in knowing their stats. Since I don’t encourage using a scale to show progress, I suggest my clients to look in the mirror, and take measurements of your stomach, chest, arms, thighs and neck once a month. Do these two things and take note of how you feel. Feeling great in your own body is the most important thing!

Lastly, I recommend the “jean test” for clients who want to see results in a tangible way. Getting 3 different size jeans to gage your size in throughout your weight loss process is the best way to do this. Pick your current jeans, then another one 2 sizes smaller and a third one being your ultimate fit. As each month progresses, take photos with each pair to see your change in how you look and most importantly how you feel when looking in the mirror. Ultimately, scales give anxiety and don’t determine the full version of you, so throw it away.
